How To Set Up Your Remote Workforce After Coronavirus Ends

While the Coronavirus pandemic appears to be dropping off, there’s no telling if things will go back to the way they once were. Yes, the traditional office will remain, but expect an increase in remote workers who prefer to do their work off-site, or from home.

Adjusting to this change isn’t hard. It requires only a bit of foresight in order to work. Here are some tips to set up your remote workspace if you plan to stay detached from the office after the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end.

#1) THE COMPUTER

Chances are, you’re going to need to stay connected to your teammates in order to work with them remotely. That means having a reliable computer that can run the tasks needed, but there’s more to it than that. While you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on a top of the line machine to do work, you should make sure your system is relatively up to date and capable of handling minimum system requirements for your specific applications. Security is also a factor. If possible, have your IT department set up your computer and apply necessary restrictions to prevent things like security breaches, data loss and malware infections. Remember that we live in an age of ransomware, which is costing businesses millions of dollars, so don’t do sensitive work on a machine you aren’t sure is locked down. Finally, be sure you have the right accessories to do your work, such as a webcam (if required), headphones and a mic, in case you’re video conferencing.

#2) THE FURNITURE

Office furniture plays an important part in the traditional office as well as the remote office, which is why it’s important to have the right kind for your space. Measure your available room and invest in an appropriate office furniture setup that doesn’t take up too much space, and allows you to remain flexible. Most remote workers won’t require a massive desk to do their work, but it should be stocked with the appropriate add-ons, such as drawers and bins. If your work is 100% digital, you can possibly forego this in favor of a no-frills furniture approach, but don’t forget that chair! You’re just as prone to fatigue and back problems at home as you are in the office, which means requires finding a good chair that is ergonomic, comfortable and reliable.

#3) STAY GREEN

With spring now in full swing and the summer months soon to follow, it’s easy to crack the windows and allow some fresh air into your space. This is an advantage many office environments don’t have, but make sure to take a page from their book, nonetheless. Many office environments incorporate biophilic design into the space, and you can too. Make sure to dot your remote space with some potted plants and other greenery to inspire comfort and relaxation, and get you into the right frame of mind. With so much stress on our minds during the COVID-19 pandemic, we could all certainly use it!

#4) STAY CONNECTED

Even with the pandemic winding down and the re-opening of the economy on its way, many people will be waiting out the tail end of the storm via remote work. Make sure to be prepared not just with hardware, but software as well. Apps like Slack can help keep Team members in the loop 24/7 in case of emergencies, last-minute updates or new projects that need finishing. Project management programs like Monday.com can assist when it comes to managing deadlines, changes or new items on the to-do list. Chances are your company has worked out the right system, but don’t be afraid to drop suggestions, either. The tools are already available to make remote work a breeze, so utilize them.

#5) THE RIGHT FUEL

If you’re working from home, it can be tempting to raid the pantry and empty the whole box of Oreo cookies, so make sure to exercise restraint. Don’t let it become a habit. Think of remote work as you would a day at the office. Plan for your lunch break and stick to it. Eat healthy foods that cut down on weight gain, and help you focus better. Too much comfort comes with an unfortunate price tag, and in an era where remote workers are spending extended periods of time away from the office, there’s too much temptation to take lightly.
